St. Moritz, Switzerland - February 11, 2006

The II Olympic Winter Games opened February 11, 1928 - 78 years ago today - in St. Moritz, Switzerland.

The skeleton was contested for the first time, down the famous Cresta run. Norway's Sonja Henie created a sensation by winning the women’s figure skating at the tender age of fifteen, the youngest winner of an individual event which would stand for the next 74 years!

Sweden's Gillis Grafström won his third straight gold medal in men's figure skating. Canada again dominated the ice hockey tournament, winning their three matches 11-0, 14-0 and 13-0 (a combined score of 38-0)!

In all, 464 athletes (26 women, 438 men) from 25 nations competed in 14 events.
