2012 Days to London 2012
London, England - January 23, 2007
The Games of the XXX Olympiad will be celebrated in London in 2012 days, with the Opening Ceremony on July 27, 2012. The special milestone was marked by the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) by launching its Sustainable Development Strategy. ODA is the public body responsible for ensuring delivery of the new venues and infrastructure for the Games.
Key Elements
During the construction phase, the ODA will set new standards for sustainable design and construction of major sports venues and infrastructure used for the Games, as well as setting performance measures for tackling climate change, maximising the use of sustainable transport and minimising and reusing waste.
Key elements of the strategy will focus particularly on:
- climate change - aiming to reduce Olympic Park carbon dioxide emissions by 50% by 2013;
- waste and materials - recycling or reusing 90 per cent of demolition material;
- water - ensuring efficient water use, reuse and recycling in the venues and residential development; and
- transport and mobility - prioritising walking, cycling and the use of public transport to and within the Olympic Park and other Olympic venues.
This planning of the Games and their legacy together will help ensure that a lasting social, sustainable and environmental legacy remains after 2012.
Wider Areas
Beyond these key elements, the strategy also looks at wider areas of sustainability, such as biodiversity and ecology; supporting communities; materials sourcing; access to the park; land, water, noise and air impacts; employment and business opportunities; health and well-being; and the inclusion of the communities surrounding the Olympic Park and venues.
