IOC Elects Sochi to Host the XXII Olympic Winter Games

Guatemala City, Guatemala - July 4, 2007

The International Olympic Committee has elected the city of Sochi, Russia as the host city for the XXII Olympic Winter Games in 2014.

Sochi was elected in the second round of voting by IOC Members meeting at the 119th IOC Session in Guatemeal with 51 votes against 47 votes for PyeongChang, Korea. Salzburg, Austria was eliminated in the first ballot.

The 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi will provide a new gateway for winter sport in Russia and provide the country's first international-tier training and competition facilities for alpine skiing, sliding sports and ski jumping.

The election of Sochi and the new facilities it will bring is expected to inspire the youth of the nation and energise the growth of winter sports.

The Sochi Olympic Park will offer an innovative solution, situated on the Black Sea coast in an area designated for significant development. It will include all ice venues, the Olympic Stadium, the main Media Centre, and the main Olympic Village. It has been designed by experienced Olympic planners to offer athletes and officials, the IOC, the media, the sponsors and spectators extraordinary convenience and opportunities to enjoy the Games. The mountain venues are situated in the same valley, and will be within 50 km from the coastal cluster of venues, making travel times short.

Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin participated in the Sochi delegation's final presentation made to the IOC Members. In addition to the candidature files and presentations made by the delegations, the IOC Members had the benefit of the detailed reports and presentations made by the IOC’s Evaluation Commission for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games.
