1-Year Countdown to the XXI Olympic Winter Games

Vancouver 2010 | One-Year Countdown

February 12, 2009 marked the 1-year countdown to the opening of the XXI Olympic Winter Games.

To celebrate, the Vancouver 2010 Organizing Committee (VANOC) unveiled its Olympic Torch design and torchbearer uniform in the presence of a number of dignitaries in Whistler, site of the skiing and other events.

The torch was developed by a design team from Bombardier Aerospace and Bombardier Transportation. The IOC approved a conceptual design in June 2008. Bombardier is also designing the cauldrons for the Olympic and Paralympic flames for Vancouver and Whistler. The torchbearer uniform was designed by HBC.

IOC President Jacques Rogge spoke at the event about the pride of having the Olympic Torch Relay in your own country and its ability to inspire. “For most people – whether as spectators or torchbearers – the Olympic Torch Relay is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I have seen the pride people feel when this vibrant symbol of the world’s hope and excitement is carried through their own community. Many of those who witness the Olympic Torch Relay will find it ignites a passion and inspires them to participate in sport, to give their very best in all they do.”
