IOC Elects Rio de Janeiro for 2016 Olympic Games

Copenhagen - October 2, 2009

The International Olympic Committee elected Rio de Janeiro to host the Games of the XXXI Olympiad in 2016.

The vote was held today at the 121st IOC Session in Copenhagen, Denmark.

U.S. President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, football player of the century Pele, Spanish King Juan Carlos I, Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, Honourary IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch and Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama were in Copenhagen to support their respective Candidate Cities.


IOC Voting Summary

106 IOC Members attended the 121st IOC Session in Copenhagen, Denmark on October 2, 2009 to elect the host city of the Games of the XXXI Olympiad in 2016.

95 IOC Members were eligible to vote in the first round. IOC Members from Brazil, Japan, Spain and the United States) were not eligible to vote until their Candidate City was eliminated from the election. Also not voting were the IOC President and the IOC Member election scrutineers.
